Cory Imig, Laura Nugent and Jessica Simorte
This exhibition brings together the works of Cory Imig, Laura Nugent and Jessica Simorte and their acute observations regarding ideas of change, time, place and natural patterns. Observation, adaptation and interpretation are the shared elements in the studio practices of these three Kansas City artists. Using shape, color and repetition, each artist distills these concepts into minimal, abstract works that are reflective and responsive to the world around them.
About the Artists:
Cory Imig is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and educator working in Kansas City, Missouri. She attended Savannah College of Art and Design, where she studied fibers and sculpture. Imig has attended artist residencies throughout the country and has participated in numerous shows in the Midwest. Imig along with four others was awarded a Rocket Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Art in 2011, to start a curatorial collaborative in the West Bottoms called Plug Projects. Currently, Imig is a lecturer in the Fiber Department at the Kansas City Art Institute. www.coryimig.com
Laura Nugent has been living and working as a full time artist in Kansas City for the last decade. She received her BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art and furthered her studies at SACI in Florence, Italy and the New School for Social Research in New York. As a painter, Nugent seeks to create the maximum visual effect with the simplest and fewest elements. Her work follows a tradition of contemporary abstract minimalism. She uses wood, canvas, paper and plaster as surfaces for her paintings. Her work is inspired by geometric patterns and quilted textiles. www.lauranugent.com
Jessica Simorte was born in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1988. She recently received her MFA from the University of Cincinnati (DAAP) in Cincinnati, OH, and holds a BA from the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth, KS where she graduated Suma Cum Laude. She has exhibited locally and internationally, including The Painting Center in New York, NY, and many galleries throughout the Midwest.
